Auditioning for a place in the 1990 District IX All-District Band Concert is something Rappahannock County High School Band Director David Orth encourages among his students.
For German exchange student Ulrike Kleingam, the audition lead her into the one of the most memorable as well as most challenging events while in the United States.
“I have never played in a band so large,” the German trombonist said, adding that in her native country band lessons are not offered in school and her education was from a friend who played. “People take private lessons but no one learns an instrument in school,” she said, adding she usually played with German church bands consisting of 10 or 12 instruments. “There were over 80 people in the band at Woodbridge,” she said with amazement.
“It is much harder to play with such a band,” she said with honesty, adding the concert music was difficult and competition was stiff. “Most of the students there have private lessons as well as school lessons and desire a career in music later,” she added, saying “each performer was a musician in their own right. ”
