To the editor:
I was embarrassed for Clabert Smoot at the Town Planning Commission meeting three weeks ago.
For months, Mr. Smoot has been critical of Newbill Miller relative to Mr. Miller’s involvement in developing the current Town boundaries. Prior to the Planning Commission meeting someone, whom Mr. Smoot trusted, convinced him that Mr. Miller was not responsible for the boundaries.
As a result, Mr. Smoot had the dignity to publicly apologize to Mr. Miller. Sadly, Mr. Miller did not, in reply, acknowledge that he was indeed responsible for the current boundary survey. In maintaining his silence, Mr. Miller effectively accepted Mr. Smoot’s misguided apology sod gave credibility to a lie.
I’ni, not sure I understood who Mr. Smoot’s unknown confidant blamed for Mr. Smoot’s boundary problems, but I believe it was me. Such an allegation is preposterous and I can’t imagine how it was “sold” to Mr. Smoot.
During the period of the survey and public hearings, I was still new in Town. I was not a participant in town government. My wife did not become a Council member until the new survey was already on record and the subject of public hearings. I did not even see the new Town boundary map until a year or two later when amendments were being considered to the Zoning Ordinance.
The creation of the Town boundaries was, as is public knowledge, a virtually one-man effort by Newbill Miller.
