high school’s individual talent for placement in the honor band. In December, auditions are held.
“When I went in to audition,” Miss Kleingarn said with laughter, “I was very nervous. I heard another trombone warming up and I felt I would never be able to compete with such perfection.”
The audition consisted of music I scales, five major key performances and two pieces of side-reading.
“I wanted to try,” she said, adding she never thought she would place but she “hoped. ”
Five students auditioned from Rappahannock. Ulrike Kleingarn was the only student chosen — one of seven trombone and two bass trombone performers in the entire band.
“It is a very prestigious award,” band director Orth explained with pride adding Miss Kleingarn’s placement was not only recognized by him, but “other students look up to those who achieve such notice.”
Woodbridge High School hosted the weekend event — students attending from a distance of more than 30 miles away were housed with host families.
