The Rappahannock News received seven awards in the annual competition sponsored by the Virginia Press Association.
The announcement and awards were presented during the VPA’s annual winter meeting in Richmond on Feb. 2 and 3.
According to Managing Editor Lou Hatter, the News won awards in each of the three categories of competition: writing, photography and design. The newspaper competed against all other weeklies in the state with circulation of 5,000 or less, a total of more than 40 newspapers.
Staff photographer Cindy Mahan received a first place award in the photo-illustration category for her photogram, made by placing flowers and ferns directly on photosensitive paper. Her photograph of a youngster quietly resting in the hay with her heifer during the 4-H Farm Show last summer won a second place in the general news category.
Ms. Mahan and Mr. Hatter shared a first place award in the photo-essay category for their photographs titled “A (Rainy) Day at the Races” from the Rappahannock Point-to-Point last spring.
Mr. Hatter received a first place award for his design of the newspaper’s editorial and op-ed pages, and a second place award for sports feature writing for his story on the Tour de Trump’s swing through Rappahannock County last May.
