Some of the folks got pretty mad at Peter and Rinehart. But you couldn’t blame them, really. They were just making their buisness grow. ’Course, when the town had to put in that new sewer system, which tripled everybody’s property tax, well, you could say that led to some pretty hard feelings for a while.
It was no surprise when those two fellas sold their place to Marriott. I mean, how could they have refused so many millions? And you can’t blame them for what Marriott did. That 14-story hotel was Marriott’s idea, not theirs.
And it wasn’t all bad. Lots of jobs came to the county. All those fellas you see parking the cars and directing traffic now — well, they used to be farmers. Used to have a lot of farmers around here in those days. Back when we had the cattle here.
I guess it was progress. Everybody said it was. Me, though, I was pretty grumpy about it. See, I used to live in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. then, in Fairfax County. We had progress up to our eyeballs there. Tyson’s Comer. Interstate 66. Metro trains. Condos. Take a number at the hard ware store — that sort of thing.
I got sick of it, son, so I bought the land in Rappahannock. Just to have some quiet, some open space. Used to come out here to listen to the birds sing, and the wind in the pines, and to walk along Blackwater Creek — which wasn’t really black water then like it is now.
