Let’s see, I guess it must have been around 20 years ago when it all started. Seems like it was around 1989 or 1990 when the money fever really hit Rappahannock County.
Before that, Rappahannock was a quiet, rural county. You could actually drive down old Route 211 at a leisurely pace, watching the black angus grazing in the fields.
What’s that son? Black angus? Well, black angus were cattle, you know, like cows. I forget you haven’t ever seen a cow. Used to be a lot of them around here.
Anyway, as I recall it began around the time those two nice fellas who ran The Inn at Little Washington decided to expand. Hey, Mabel, what was their names? Yeah, Rinehart and Peter.
They added this big wing to their Inn, see. It had a swimming pool and all. Real fancy. Folks just came from all over to stay there and eat. Best food anywhere, some of them said. It was a fabulous success.
Yep, that Inn did a lot for the town. Lots of tourists. Good for business. Everybody made more money.
Sort of changed the psychology around here, I think. You know, you see your neighbor really making it big and you wonder, why can’t I get on that gravy train? Pretty soon all kinds of ideas started popping up.
That’s when the first golf course in the county went in, son. You know, the small one down along Route 522, south of Woodville. Those folks hit it big. Naturally, that led to the ski resort up the road
