On green foliage, symptoms include tan spots that develop purple halos around them. Entire leaves may become necrotic. In some cases, holes will appear.
Soon the disease will spread into the twigs, form cankers, and eventually cause twig dieback. Even the beautiful spring flowers may become spotted or blighted. Consecutive years of heavy infection have resulted in extensive mortality.
Dogwoods receiving good cultural care will be better able to withstand an anthracriose attack. Maintain the health of dogwoods by watering during periods of drought. However, avoid „wetting the foliage as that can speed up the activity of the fungus. Mulching can also help to reduce watering needs as well as protect trunks from mechanical injury.
