Miss Updike, who is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Updike of Newsoms, is the granddaughter of Mrs. John Updike of Washington.
The award was based largely on Miss Updike’s meticulous records, which showed that, since 1978, she had canned 3,017 jars of fruits, vegetables, jams and pickles; froze 3,824 packages of vegetables and other foods; and dried 483 pounds of fruits,! vegetables and meats. !
During the past several years,1 Miss Updike’s food preservation has saved her family more than $2,000 in grocery bills, the advisor to the Como 4-H Club estimated.
Jennifer has been an active participant in 4-H for 10 years. She is a senior at Southhampton Academy, and hopes to attend either Virginia Tech or North Carolina State University, where she plans to major in accounting.
In addition to her food preservation work, Miss Updike has also had a busy career in 4-H in the show ring and exhibition hall. She has raised 454 animals and exhibited 251 of them. She has also made more than 1,000 craft items, and sewed another 50 garments and other handwork.
Jennifer’s brother and sister were also winners of state 4-H honors. When asked her secret of success in raising children, her mother replied, “Keep them busy. They always had chores around the house and around the farm. They learned a sense of responsibility.”
In addition to her national honor, , Miss Updike was also recently chosen as 4-H’er of the Year in Hertford County.
