The observant peach grower will prune trees more severely when there is a potential for a large crop. Trees with a heavy bud crop and varieties that produce small fruit should be pruned most severely to reduce thinning costs and to improve fruit size.
Importance of light: In 1983 the quality of fruit developing in different canopy positions was characterized. Fruit from the tree top had slightly greater red color and soluble solids than fruit from the bottom of the tree. Light in the immediate vicinity of the fruit does not seem very important since shading studies have indicated fairly poor relationships between percent full sun and fruit size, red color, firmness and soluble solids.
Canopy position: Shoots developing in different canopy locations vary in fruiting potential. Upright shoots in the tree center are often 50 percent longer and have 40 percent fewer flowers compared to upright shoots on the tree periphery. Although interior shoots are less fruitful than peripheral shoots, the most productive open-center peach trees possess fruiting shoots along the scaffold branches to the tree center. To maintain fruiting wood on the tree interior, completely remove water sprouts with lateral branches.
