The Rappahannock “Blues” alumni team walked away with the tournament championship last weekend, but the real winner was the RCHS junior class, which cleared more than $1,100 from the benefit. The funds will go toward the juniorsenior prom.
Coach Gary Leake, who organized the tournament, pronounced it a complete success, and noted that last-minute inquiries had raised the number of participating alumi to 48 — enough for four 12-man teams. “A couple of other guys were interested in playing, but we didn’t have enough to even up the teams,” he said Monday.
The only complaints apparently came from the aging veterans’ muscles, and the air was heavy with the smell of “Atomic Balm” and other analgesic creams as the players arrived for the second night of play on Saturday. Greeting one arrival, who stuck out his hand to the coach, Leake jokingly replied, “I’d shake hands but I’ve got so much Sports Cream on it’ll eet all over you!”
