Defensively, the infield is all but set for the Lady Panthers. Sherron Boddie will return at first base, but second base is still up for grabs. Sophomore Angela Pullen is battling junior Heidi Maeyer for the position, and the coach said both are still in contention for the starting spot.
At shortstop, sophomore Tasha Roy sports the strongest arm on the team. She was thrown into the position, the coach said, with no experience there before this year. Her weakness is control, but again the coach said her work with fundamentals should cure that problem.
The hot corner is also up for grabs, with freshman Emma Swatman and Maeyer again battling for third base. “It might come down to the last practice before I decide,” the coach said.
In the outfield, left field is a tossup between sophomore Jodie Bodkin and Susan Payne, who plays in the outfield when not on the mound.
Center will be anchored by Deena Hitt, whose rifle arm Coach Leake calls “incredible.”
In right field, Coach Leake is looking at several players to fill the position. Amy Keller, a sophomore, had never played softball before she tried out last season, but her progress has been good. “She really works at it. She played with her family during the summer, and this year she’s battling for a starting spot.”
