no longer able to make the trips, I would fill several jugs and take them to him. He said the bottles ruined the taste.
To the day he died, he always asked us to get him to the spring “one more time.” On the day he died, he smiled the sweetest smile...I knew he had made it back to the spring.
I know that when the person first placed the complaint, he thought he was doing a good deed. His complaint was looked into, a sign was posted, all should have been well.
People from this area will take the sign for what it is — garbage. People not from around here will steer clear and not encounter the “menacing bacteria.”
In years to come, because of growth and pollution, the spring may have to be closed for honest to goodness health reasons. For now though, a little of that bacteria never hurt anyone. And when in doubt, bring your own water or better yet — stay in the city.
