Trees can be fertilized with 5-1010 fertilizer at the rate of four pounds per inch of trunk. Fertilization should extend from an area twofeet away from the main stem to the tree’s dripline. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers.
Effective control is possible only , if the disease is detected before extensive dieback occurs. Prune and dispose of diseased twigs and branches to reduce potential sources of innoculum and approve tree appearance. Raking up fallen leaves will also be beneficial.
As a last resort, fungicides are available that can be effective. Application needs to begin in early spring. Apply three or four sprays at 10 to 14 day intervals as soon as the leaves begin to appear. If cool, wet weather persists, applications may need to continue.
