attempt for the team. She’s a junior, and Coach Leake said she asked, “Where were you the past two years?” As one of the team’s best hitters, she should see a lot of playing time.
Rounding out the team, Coach Leake said, Edna Shanks will be used as a pinch runner, where her speed on the basepaths could be a big asset for the Panthers.
Two freshmen, Lori Paratore and Jennifer Leake, are learning the game as they go, but Paratore will be used as a reserve outfielder, while Leake provides depth to the infield game.
Sherry Burke, a sophomore, is a first-time team member who is among the team’s most enthusiastic. “She has a good attitude while she learns the basics,” the coach said.
Depth will be a strength this season for the first time, Coach Leake said. In the past, some of the problem has been a lack of competition for the starting slots. “The girls didn’t work to their potential.”
For some, the pressure has been unnerving. “They don’t like it. But I told them, life is pressure. You will see it, both in life, and in the seventh inning with the bases loaded.”
Offensively, Coach Leake is optimistic. “There’s room to improve, but we are better than last year.” She has tried several innovations, including hitting from a batting tee to school the girls on their swings and develop their hand-eye coordination. “I’ve tried a lot of new things, and so far they’re all positive.”
