favor, including the three-point line. Leake himself benefited there, hitting a long set shot for a swish at the halftime buzzer to bump the lead to 34-29.
He said that before the Contests, the players were reminded that “it’s all in fun, to take it easy on each other. But once the buzzer sounded,” Coach Leake admitted, the “fun” became downright competitive basketball.
“I was real pleased and thankful to the community that so many showed up to enjoy two nights of good basketball.”
He said that plans have already begun for next year’s tournament, which will probably be scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend to give even more alumni an opportunity to return. Coach Leake added that a Shenandoah Motors in Front Royal has expressed interest in sponsoring the event. “That would put a whole new emphasis on it — and that’s what we were looking for.”
After a three-year layoff, Coach Leake said his goal was to reestablish the tournament as an annual event. “Next year, we’ll have four new coaches, have a whole new draft, and even more players — I hope.”
Coach Leake invited anyone with suggestions about how to improve the tournament to call him at the high school (987-8575).
As for his alumni coaching career, Leake said it’s over. “I’m going to retire 1-0.”
