terms of age, with all four grades represented. The six seniors are Daczewitz, Atkins, Allsberry, Tummeyer, Settle and Butler. There are four juniors, Mitch Terry, Gore, Tom Brown and exchange student Kentaro Otani. Three sophomores came out this year, Jenkins, Chris Sutton and Justin Ferrence. And three freshmen are also jockeying for a spot on the roster, Tyrone Starks, John Mallory and Richie Lillard.

One factor in the team’s favor, he said, is that many of the players can double in two or three positions. And in many cases, the first team player is an upperclassman, who is backed up by a freshman. “That experience can teach the young guys a lot,” he said.

The coach noted that the team really showed its dedication even before practices began. “They came out and really worked their butts off for two days rebuilding the field.”

The basepaths were dug and the dirt replaced to improve the footing, and the pitcher’s mound got some major rebuilding work as well. And after a tape measure proved that the infield area was not symmetrical on both sides of the field, the team members removed sod on the short side and replaced it with fresh dirt to even up the perimeter.

The team, Coach Van Horn concluded, is eager to start the season. “We’re out here every day, working on the basics, the mechanics and the fundamentals.”
