Very few barrels have a wire screen or lid to place over the top. Most of them are rusty and have holes. Usually there has been little effort to clear a fire-safe zone around the barrel. If you have not done so already, take some extra precautions this year to make your outdoor fire safe.
There are other burning laws also. For example, failure to fully extinguish a fire causes a few problems each spring. The fire must be dead out before leaving it. Even though there is no smoke, a fire may not be dead out. Hot embers can lay dormant for several days before high winds fan them to life.
There are also laws to guard against carelessly and negligently set fires. Some examples are dumping hot ashes and failure to clean around a trash or debris fire.
