Next week, when Steve Young undergoes the first nonrelated-donor bone marrow transplant ever performed in Virginia, it will be a milestone for medicine.
For Mr. Young, a husband and father of two boys, the date will be a milestone as well. He hopes the painful procedure will lead to full recovery from leukemia, the debilitating form of cancer for which he was diagnosed in 1988.
The transplant, to be performed at the U.Va. Hospital in Charlottesville, is the first in the state for which the person donating the healthy bone marrow is not a relative. .
Mr. Young’s anonymous donor was a perfect fit. Because matches are so difficult, family members are often donors.
