illiterates. A “functional” illiterate is a person who can read some but not enough to function well in society. Virginia is currently one of the leading states in confronting illiteracy, mainly because of the cooperation of both public and private sectors.
The private sector is called the Virginia Literacy Foundation and in the past three years has increased from 34 groups to 82. Publicly, moeny supplied by the state government in the past three years has increased from $20,000 to $2,100,000.
The President General’s Message was read by Mrs. Randolph Dixon in which Mrs. Yochim stressed how the DAR is a service organization in fields of medicine, education, helping American Indians and immigrants, in conservation, literacy and manyhther service areas.
