Political buttons decorate the walls of Jerry M. Wood’s office in the back of his pharmacy. Active in the Democratic party since 1962, Wood has had a zest for politics for as long as he can remember.
“I've done everything from putting up signs to knocking on doors to running campaigns,” said Mr. Wood, owner of the Fauquier Pharmacy on Main Street in Warrenton.
This year Mr. Wood feels the time is right to be a candidate, announcing his plans to seek election to the 31st District seat of the House of Delegates, which includes all of Rappahannock and most of Fauquier. Gov. Wilder signed off on the House’s redistricting plan as he vetoed the Senate’s last week.
Mr. Wood had already announced his intention to seek the seat.
“I’ve always been a bridesmaid, but not a bride,” he said.
Mr. Wood, who has long fought for the notion of a Fauquier resident representing Fauquier in the House of Delegates, said that he would run for the House if the state legislature created a district with mostly Fauquier residents.
The redistricting session of the Virginia General Assembly earlier this month gave Wood his chance by placing the majority of Fauquier in the 31st House District with the exception of the precincts of Rectortown and The Plains. Rappahannock County and four precincts of Warren County are also grouped with Fauquier in the new 31st District.
