What we

really do

To the Editor:

In response to “We Kill Eagles,” by Marilouise K. Bane (letters, April 18): Thig letter is to say that, like Ms. Bane, I deplore the killing of the eagles, and to introduce her to the real United States, where she will find life much better, I am sure, than it is where she is now.

Here, we do help refugees from defeated countries, we do house the homeless, we do feed our children, we do pay to finance education, mental health programs, social services, and programs for the disabled.

Naturally, as intelligent people, we do our level best not to hand our money over until we are satisfied that it will go to help the people it is supposed to help, and not the people who elect themselves to do the helping. It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it.

Dissension does ensue, wherefore the growth of an American institution called “Letters to the Editor,” one of the brightest jewels in Miss Liberty’s crown.

As to emptying ashtrays in people’s driveways and dumping garbage by the side of the road, there are people who do these things, obviously a “he” or “she,” perhaps an occasional “they,” but a “we”? No. A “we” has to include a “me,” and my mother would rise and dismember me. Neatly.

Probably recycle me too. Into a mop, probably, much as I would rather be a paperweight. But I digress.

Yes, there are those among us who tried to run over a man carrying a replica of the cross on Good Friday, but even that’s progress. The first time, they caught Him and hung Him on that cross and tormented Him until he died. So we are improving. Let’s take consolation from that and look at each other with a kinder eye.

For every one among us who will kill an eagle, there are many more who protect the lives of the most helpless as we would our own.

Under the Constitution, that, as Ms. Bane points out, was written for all of us, we are all free to be our many different selves in our many different ways. Long live the difference!
