The Rappahannock Planning Commission voted this week to recommend approval for a special ise permit for a kennel near Huntly.
Don and Mary Neilsen requested the special use permit to build the kennel on a 26-acre parcel they plan to buy from Alfredo Pestana in Blue Ridge View Farm.
The Neilsens raise schipperkes, pronounced skipper keys, a breed of small black dog that was developed in Belgium.
Mr. Nielsen said they raise the dogs to show and sell some puppies, but he said his was a “hobby kennel.” He said he would not be taking in dogs to board or train and that he would advertise his dogs in breed magazines.
The planners asked that the kennel be located over a hill from the road so that the sound of barking dogs would be screened from neighbors.
Greg Clark, the Realtor handling the sale from the Pestanas to the Nielsens, said Mr. Pestana had been a “nervous seller. ” He said the Pestanas had checked the current location of the Nielsens’ kennel in northern Virginia and were “impressed that with 500 houses around him there had been no problems.”
