The Rappahannock High girls softball team poised itself for a bid for the district playoffs by staging an unforgettable final-inning comeback Friday to beat previously undefeated Page in a home contest, 10-9.
The girls were behind 9-3 going into the bottom of the ninth inning before nine players in a row got on base, scoring seven runs.
Heidi Maeyer started the rally with a lead-off walk, then advanced on a Marsha Freeman single. Both Maeyer and Freeman scored on hit by Heather Coffey, bringing the score to 9-5.
Susan Payne walked, then a Bonnie Jewell single knocked in another run, making the score 9-6.
Angela Pullen then smacked a triple, sending in two runners and leaving tlfc Lady Panthers only one run back. Ketrich Beaver hit a single, scoring Pullen, but Beaver was thrown out trying to steal.
Emma Swatman came to the plate with the score tied and one out, getting a single. She advanced to second on another single, then stole third.
The Page County catcher overthrew third trying to pick off Swatman, who was waived home with the winning run.
“People were going crazy; it was unbelievable,” said Coach Renee Leake. “Beating Page, the first.place team, is going to help us out a lot.”
Page went to the regional tournament last year. They had been 120 going into the game; the loss drops them to 12-1.
The top four teams from the regular season advance to the district tournament. Last year the Rappahannock softball team came in fifth, narrowly missing a post-season berth. This week, about halfway through the season, the Lady Panthers are tied for fourth with Central, who they were slated to play Wednesday. Friday’s game is against Manassas Park. Both games
