During the two and a half years since he was diagnosed with cancer, Mr. Young has undergone a variety of treatments.
The transplant, however, is his best shot for a full recovery.
“I’ve talked about it with a number of people who have been through it,” he said. “There’s quite a lot of sickness involved, that’s the main thing.”
His body will be subjected to high-intensity doses of radiation and chemotherapy as doctors try to kill off his natural white blood cells.
Recovery in the hospital will take six to eight weeks, he said, and even upon return he may have to remain isolated for up to two months out of fear of infection.
“Even the common cold can kill you” when natural resistance is down, he said.
