One of the educational programs conducted by the American Cancer Society is the Great American F ood Fight Against Cancer. This is a program for elementary school students that lets them taste many types of fruits and teaches them why fruits and vegetables - especially the ones high in fiber and vitamins A and C - are “protectors,” because they help protect the body from certain types of cancer and other serious diseases.
Even though I’ve been teaching nutrition programs for 15 years, I never thought I’d be advocating a “food fight” in the schools!
Yet, when the newly organized Rappahannock County chapter of the Cancer Society asked me if I would be the contact with the schools, I learned that the “food fight against cancer” was not the typical food fight we envision in the school cafeteria and the movies.
