“They are learning how to handle, their problems without taking it out on teachers, the school or their friends,” she said. “They feel better about themselves when they learri they aren’t alone with these problems and that they can cope.”
She said that if the grants continue “we can keep these groups perpetuating themselves. ” ",
She said most of the teachers cooperate in letting the students out of class to meet in their groups. “If the teacher says there is a test that day,*' then the kid goes to class,” she] added. Sometimes the student is in; class part of the period and meets with the stress group for the rest of the period.
“The drug-free schools and the dropout prevention go hand in hand,” Mrs. Fox said. “Often the same kids fall into both categories.”
However, she added that in some ways Rappahannock is unique. “For many of our kids dropping out is a family tradition,” she said.
Much of what Mrs. Fox does is not necessarily a part of any of these programs. “A lot of what I do is what a lot of parents should be doing,” she saijd. She concentrates on students considered “at risk” of dropping out. “I ask them, ‘Have you done your homework?’ or ‘Have you studied for the test?’ I do an awful lot of nagging around the building,” she added.
This year she said four or five students have dropped out.
