Baseball team
wins, 11-10
The Rappahannock High baseball team got its first Bull Run District victory of the year Friday when it beat Page 11-10 in five innings.
Page had been in second place in the district, but the loss to Rappahannock dropped its record to 10-3.
The Panthers are now 2-7 overall, 1-7 in the district — with games against weaker opponents in the next two weeks.
Ninth-grader J.C. Welch picked up the win by throwing only nine pitches in relief.
The Panthers were able to make up for defensive lapses at the plate by collecting eight hits, seven for extra bases and two triples.
Catcher Kevin Daymude, who leads the team with a .417 average, hit a deep double that knocked in two runs in the bottom of the fifth, tieing the score 10-10.
Pinch runner Keith Gore scored from second on a passed ball and a single.
Rappahannock is scheduled to play Central at home Wednesday, April 24 and against Manassas Park at home on Friday, April 26.
Although the Panthers have just won their first district contest, several teams are tied with .500 records, and the top four teams advance to the district tournament. Coach Mike Tupper said the Panthers have an outside shot at making it if they can play more consistently.
