Those in the incentive program are trying to earn points. They each receive a large red assignment book. In it they keep track of their assignments in each subject.
Mrs. Fox explained that the students earn points when their teachers initial the assignment books indicating that they have completed all their assignments for the week. They receive extra points if a teacher includes comments praising the work of the student.
Each grading period the students receive more points for their grades, four for an A, three for a B, and so on. If the grade is up one letter grade from the previous report period, they receive an additional two points, and if it is up two letter grades, they receive an additional five points.
Students in remedial classes don’t receive any grades for their work, but their teachers can award them points. There is also a reading program with the students receiving points for reading books.
Mrs. Fox reported that 50 students are participating in the incentive program. Some have already received gift certificates for McDonalds.
At the end of the year there will be more substantial prizes for the three students with the most points. However, Mrs. Fox says, “The best prize is good grades. I don’t think there is any student at the high school who doesn’t get satisfaction
