A specific test date has not been scheduled according to Finley. Tests are typically given at the same time statewide, but two different test dates will be tentatively scheduled for the eastern and western parts of the state.

Only the number of correct and incorrect answers on the tests will be received by the school before it closes for the summer, with actual test scores arriving several months later.

Simply providing services will no longer determine school accreditation. While the standards are being phased in, the schools will be conditionally accredited for five years starting next year. Accreditation can be lost only after three consecutive years of warnings and could not happen earlier than the 20062007 school year. To maintain accreditation a required number of students must meet the minimum passing rate.

The SOL tests will be more rigorous than the Literacy Passport Test presently given to sixth graders. Legislation requesting the LPT be phased out is before the General Assembly, said Finley. The SOL tests are geared to testing the SOLs which are broader in scope than the LPT.

Gangel urged the board to adopt a team approach and work together on what changes need to be made to the curriculum rather than appoint chairmanships in all the different curriculum areas. The team approach is currently used to assess results for Rappahannock sixth graders’ scores on the LPT and the sixth graders scored in the top 13 out of 135 Virginia schools on the LPT
