The Rappahannock County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association held its annual awards banquet Saturday night at the Sperryville fire hall on U.S. 211. The covered dish buffet and dance was attended by more than 100 fire and rescue personnel and their families.

Association President John Henry Woodward emceed the affair, ably assisted by Sperryville Rescue Squad President Frances “Buck" Payne. Galen McBride, of Amissville, was the keynote speaker.

The 1997 award recipients chosen by the Association’s Executive Committee were: Michael Williams, Junior EMS; Trey Smith, Junior Firefighter; Peggy Woodward, Bobby Carter, and John Pearre, EMS; Bobby Smoot, Firefighter; Admiral Joseph Gardiner, Contributing Support; Rev. Carl Menefee, Contributing Member;
