Rev. Jennings Hobson spoke on behalf of the Washington Fire Department, Co. 3. He thanked the council for their approval of extra funding for the fire department for an onboard computer in the ambulance. The computer is now on operational and the rescue squad is working to define the geographic limits of the cell telephone.
In the fall, in coordination with the state grant program cycle, the fire department intends to compile an emergency medical databank on the residents of the community. This databank would be accessed through the new computer, providing vital information to rescue personnel on the scene.
“I was also asked to express some dismay over the statement that we botched a training exercise,” he continued. “I did some research on my own and (concluded) that any reasonable mishandling of the fire hydrants would not cause the water problem (reported by Treasurer Van Dort last month). Training exercises are important, not just for the fire department, they are important to the town, and as a town resident I think we should encourage training exercises. Certainly there are differences of opinion about the handling of hydrants, and I do believe that all the people involved basically know what they are doing. We all work to serve this community. We shouldn’t be working at odds.”
Rev. Hobson also said that he will be attending future meetings as a representative of the fire department to “let you all know what is going on, not just when we are asking you for more money, so when we do ask for money, it is in a context that you know what is going on.”
A light-hearted public forum ended the council meeting. Rev. Hobson responded to questions from Diane Bruce concerning the vehicles owned and operated by the fire department.
The next meeting of the town council is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the town hall.
