Cub Scout Pack 123’s 1998 Pinewood Derby races drew almost 150 scouts, siblings, parent’s and grandparents to the Washington fire hall this past Saturday, Jan. 17.
Thirty-eight scouts competed for ribbons with their homemade race cars. Fashioned from a single block of wood with plastic wheels and simple axles added, the cars lined up in the pit area bespoke many hours of creative work. There were racers of every color and style including a fire engine and a Jurassic Park truck complete with dinosaur.
Race after race was run with winners advancing to the next round. Good sportsmanship and enthusiasm were constantly in evidence. The final Pack Championship races pitted the 10 fastest cars against each other. Several close contests had the finish line judges straining their eyes, but when the scores were tallied, the results were clear.
First place honors went to Matthew Bywaters with the fastest vehicle in the pack, a yellow fire engine. Michael Thiel’s red and gold racer came in only slightly behind Bywaters’, followed closely by Luke Wilson’s shiny red roadster.
