The power-sharing arrangement
reached by the House of Delegates Jan. 15 came as the result of Republican gains at the polls; hard negotiations; and vocal, well-deserved objections by many of us over Speaker Moss’ disinclination to risk his re-election by agreeing to seat three newly elected Republicans or by delaying the vote.
Without our protests of last Wednesday, the compromise of Thursday would not have been reached. As one result of our power-sharing, I have been appointed to five committees, including Finance, Agriculture and Transportation. On Finance, which has jurisdiction over matters affecting taxes, I look forward to working with Governor Jim Gilmore in eliminating the hated car tax.
