small local newspapers can be interesting, entertaining and informative. Our country has a long and proud history of fine journalism emanating from small newspapers.
William Allen White of the Emporia Gazette in Emporia, Kansas, is one example. His fine writing and insightful editorials were an inspiration to the readers of his small newspaper and are still studied in journalism classes.
Could the Rappahannock News strive for such excellence? Where is the reporting on the real problems the school system faces such as overcrowding and the diverse needs of the student body? Where is the reporting about the economic and social diversity which exists in our county? If the News wants to write about really interesting history, why not talk to some of the older citizens of this county about the changes they have seen. There are numerous stories in our small county worth telling, and the Rappahannock News has neglected many of them.
Finally a compliment where one is due. Galen C. McBride is a reporter on the staff who can write with journalistic integrity about interesting and important issues. I am encouraged by such reporting. The citizens of Rappahannock County are facing critical issues which will determine the future of our county. We need a quality newspaper inspired by thoughtful editors, photographers and writers to help us make intelligent decisions.
