Frieda Herman, chairperson of the RCHS math department, spoke about the math curriculum. The math teachers met for four days last summer to evaluate the SOL requirements mandated by the state, she said.
Elections
The election of school board positions was handled at the start of the meeting. Dr. John Tole was re-elected chairman, Brian Lee was reelected vice-chairman, Mary Ann Biggs was re-elected as clerk and Gangel was re-elected as deputy clerk.
Lee was also re-elected to serve as the board’s representative to George Washington Carver/Piedmont Technical Education Center.
The second Tuesday of each month continues to be the designated meeting date for the board while extra meetings will be scheduled in March to prepare the budget for next year.
Gangel said later that the board has decided to meet in the music room (across the hall from the auditorium) for future board meetings unless the audience is too large.
Dennis Wingfield, board member, requested that the meeting time during the summer months be 7 p.m. and the board agreed. The meetings will be held at the Rappahannock County High School from July through December.
Other business
Previously scheduled as a teacher workday, Jan. 29 was designated as a make-up day for the Jan. 8 school closing due to flooding. The board felt a 2 p.m. student release will allow the teachers time to hold their parent conferences after the students leave.
