The second annual “Trash Free Rappahannock” clean-up campaign has concluded and the winners by a huge margin over all trash-for-cash participants is the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad with a total of 473 bags and miscellaneous roadside garbage!
This group had many helpers and set the trend for group participation, but was spearheaded by Buck Payne, who also served on this year’s Organizing Committee. Not only does this mean a significant boost of $1,419 (@ $3 per bag) to the coffers of this important community volunteer organization, they also take home the Grand Prize of $1,000 for being overall winners.
The Rappahannock Lions teamed up behind the enthusiasm of Jeff Light and friends to take second place with 328 bags donated to the cause, while Headwaters, ably led by trashy veteran Barney O’Meara (who created this year’s signup boxes),and Ragged Mountain Resource Center each topped the 200 mark.
Honorable mention includes Susan Bulin and the Berry children and Kay and Andrew Kohler for their scout groups, Amanda Stephens (for the Castleton VFD), Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School cooperative, Rappahannock Elementary School, and RLEP, who cleaned up around the Scrabble dumpster.
