The Gannon’s ^Old Sperryville Bookshop was the scene on Monday, May 10 for the first of a series of Civil War-related activities, Jim Gannon, a published Civil, War author himself, hosted the Fauquier County Civil War Roundtable, and their speaker for the evening, Clark B. Hall.
Mr. Hall orally reenacted the Battle of Brandy Station, said to be the largest cavalry battle ever on the North American continent, involving some 20,000 troops in a single day. His storytelling, perhaps due to his Marine Corps background, put the audience in the midst of the battle that took place on June 9, 1863, not 15 miles from the Rappahannock County line.
Hall’s sponsor for this event was the Fauquier County Civil War Roundtable, established only last October by a group of Civil War buffs including Jim Flanagan, who serves as President, and Gary Wilson of Slate Mills, who serves as Vice President.
The Roundtable meets monthly, generally in Warrenton, and hosts speakers and engages in discussions such as the upcoming June 14 discussion on tactics in the Civil War and the July discussion on the Stuart Horse Artillery.
