“stooped to conquer” roadside litter. Last year, approximately 75 citizens collected 1500 bags worth of litter and helped benefit 23 worthy causes. This year, well over 100 people collected a grand total of 2,121 bags which will help 28 community groups.
VDOT once again provided bright, strong orange bags and roadside pick-up throughout the program, and County Attorney Peter Luke, along with County Administrator John McCarthy, helped organize a special clean-up along the old 231 roadbed which several community members spent most of a Saturday participating in on the final weekend. Project coordinator Hunt Harris said this effort helped boost the grand total over the 2,000 bag mark.
Throughout this year’s program there was much discussion amongst community members via letters to the editor, phone messages, electronic mail and good ole’ country store porch chat about the merits of such a program and the overriding issue of litter and recycling in our community and beyond.
TFR chief instigator and fund-raiser John Kiser hopes that community members will share their ideas with one another at his home at the end of Popham’s Ford Road this coming Saturday at 4 p.m. where he and the Organizing Committee will be hosting this year’s Awards Party.
