In addition to his keyboard appearances, for many years he has been known primarily as a cellist and viola da gamba player, particularly for his work with the Smithsonian Chamber Players, Castle Trio and Smithson String Quartet, and Axelrod String Quartet. Weaver and Slowik are frequent collaborators in music for voice and keyboard, but this concert will mark the first time they will be performing Die schone Mullerin in Virginia.
The 20 songs which make up this celebrated song cycle present a touching story of ardent yet unrequited young love. Schubert’s fame was long limited to that of a songwriter, but much of his work was not even performed, yet alone published, until after his tragic death at the age of 31. He is said effectively to have established the German lied, or song, as a new art form in the 19th century. And it is generally agreed that his two song cycles, Die schone Mullerin and Winterreise have never been surpassed.
