Town
Council
agrees on
budget

At last week’s meeting, the Washington Town Council reached agreement on the town budget for Fiscal Year 1999-2000. Despite an earlier arrangement to hold the computer line item at the originally proposed $9800 until a suitable replacement computer was identified, Council member Charles Tompkins moved to reduce the budgeted amount to $3000, with the balance of $6800 to be split between water works and sewer fund reserves.

Tompkins said that he felt that $3000 was more than adequate for a computer for a town of Washington’s size. Treasurer Elaine Viguerie appealed to the Council to hold off on such action. She said that the $9800 was not for a computer, but for a service that provides the computer peripherals, software, technical support, and maintenance and felt that, in the long range, the use of such a service would save the town money.
Mrs. Viguerie added that if the Council did not wish to allocate the $9800, then as an alternative they should reduce the computer budget to $6000 and not $3000, so that a system with sufficient power could be acquired, and so that the town would not have to make a change in the near-term.
The Council voted 4 to 3 to approve Tompkins motion.
In a subsequent and related action, Mayor Stu Willis moved to take back $500 of the $6800 computer fund reallocation ($250 each from the sewer and water works reserves) to be added to the brochure budget of $1500. During the public hearings portion earlier in the Meeting, John ByaM had made such a request on behalf of the town business council. The Town Council voted to approve Mayor Willis’ motion. The entire budget will be voted upon at the next Town Council meeting.
