Another car tried to pass, which a Pontiac driven by Deborah Smith of Rochelle, Va swerved to avoid. She lost control, came back across the road and hit a fence owned by James W. Fletcher, III. Damage to the car was estimated at $2500. There were no injuries. Vanslyke has been charged with improper stopping on highway.
• Just before 5 p.m. that same afternoon, Kit Kenny of Alexandria was driving his 1997 Honda motorcycle west from Sperryville on U.S. 211 when he went into a curve too sharply. The motorcycle went onto its side and slid into a 1995 Honda two-door driven by Margaret O’Brien of Laurel, Md.
