The most significant new business before the Rappahannock County School Board Tuesday night was a proposal by Washington resident . Mitzie Young for the creation of a charitable fund to support agricultural education. The fund, originally proposed in May of 2004, would be dedicated to the memory of her late husband, Dr. Bill Young. The fund’s purpose, as described by School Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell, would be to encourage the teaching of agricultural techniques, support the retention of land' for agricultural purposes and support the employment of citizens in agricultural activity.
Last fall, a committee was formed to examine Young’s offer. Chappell reported their recommendations at Tuesday’s meeting. Contingent upon sufficient non-public (charitable) funding, the, committee offered five proposals:
1. Annual awards to students with the best class projects in the existing agricultural program. The form of the awards would be determined later, and would be called Bill Young Farmland Preservation awards.
2. Exploratory classes in agricultural and environmental subject matter for the 6th and 7th grades. New classes at the high school would be foregone for the time being, and would be considered in the future if there is sufficient
