Instruction, Mrs. Raye M. Tupper, was given authority to sign all official documents in the absence of Division Superintendent Chappell. The action was in response to a request from the Virginia Department of Education. Voting was unanimous.
Additional modifications to the school conduct code (which is being updated so that there is a single code document for both the elementary and high schools), were approved unanimously, upon Chappell’s assurance that the changes were not substantive.
Work in progress
Chappell reported to the Board on the progress of ongoing work at the elementary school to replace the roof and upgrade the heating and air conditioning. He presented a bar chart from the contractor, the Lantz Construction Company, showing the timeline of the various components of the project. Mills and Johnson both expressed concern that work would not be entirely completed by the beginning of the school year, Chappell affirmed that some work would still be ongoing, but said that if all goes well, the project would be near completion and those portions remaining would be minimally disruptive.
