Voters 'in Tuesday’s Democratic primary for li tenant governor chose experience over youth, placing Fairfax’s Leslie Byrne on the party’s November ticket alongside gubernatorial nominee Tim Kaine.

Byrne, 58, a veteran of state and national politics, will be the only Northern Virginian on either statewide ticket. She won with 34 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results.

Richmond Del. Viola Baskerville, 53, was second followed by Fairfax Del. Chap Petersen, 37, and Lebanon state Sen. Phillip Puckett, 57.

In the Republican primary, Jerry Kilgore, 43, easily dispatched Warrenton Mayor George Fitch, 57, by more than a four-to-one margin.

Kilgore will be joined on the GOP ticket by Mechanicsville state Sen. Bill Bolling, 47, who defeated Sean Connaughton, 44, chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, 56 to 44 percent.
