McDonnell, 51, defeated Richmond attorney Steve Baril, 50, for the Republican attorney general nomination 62 to 38 percent.

McDonnell will now face Democrat Creigh Deeds, a state senator from Bath County.

Both Kaine, 47, and Deeds, 47, were unopposed on the Democratic ticket. The two made an impromptu appearance at Byrne’s victory reception in Falls Church Tuesday night.

“We’re going to make sure, come November, we have Tim, Leslie and Creigh, some TLC for Virginia,” said Byrne, the first congresswoman elected from Virginia who will now tiy to become its first female lieutenant governor.

In- addition to Kilgore and Kaine, Independent Republican Russ Potts, 66, a state senator from Winchester, is also running for governor. Last week he filed more than double the number of signatures required by the State Board of Elections to get his name on the ballot.
