Written by John Logan (“Gladiator” and “Any Given Sunday”) “The Aviator” begins with Hughes as a impressionable Texas boy being bathed by his mother as she instills in him his famous fear of germs. The movie moves quickly to 1927 to find him as a 22-year-old rich kid trying to break into Hollywood at the top, with a series of very funny sequences that reveal his obsessive, three-year quest to make his WWI aerial epic, “Hells Angels.” Against the odds, we see Hughes conquer Hollywood and win its greatest lady, the young, untamed Kate Hepburn (played by Cute Blanchett).
Hughes’ rising business career contrasts with his round-the-world plane trip, and these high-soaring scenes end with the film’s seguing first climax: the crash of his experimental plane in Beverly Hills, a symbolic smashup that
