The two candidates for the open seat in the 15th District House of Delegates answered questions from the public last Wednesday evening.
Rappahannock County’s Democratic candidate Jim Blubaugh faced Republican Tbdd Gilbert from Shenandoah County when they spoke at the Luray Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post, along with candidates for the Page County Board of Supervisors.
Their answers show real differences in their philosophies along with an underlying consensus on many of the issues facing our area. Here is a portion of what they both said.
Eminent Domain
Gilbert and Blubaugh had a vigor' ous exchange on condemning land by eminent domain and giving it over to private enterprise.
Gilbert: “My opponent thinks it’s ok for localities to take our property... Tb me that is one of the worst decisions in our Supreme Court, that eroded personal rights. It lets local governments run amok.
Blubaugh: “There is a difference between us on eminent domain. The Supreme Court said it is not a federal issue and should be a local decision. That is right. It should be decided not in Washington and not in Richmond. Two examples: If you yourself had to fight eminent domain, would you want to take it to the State Capitol? Ib
