Survivors often focus on the circumstances surrounding the death of a loved one, and often imagine their feelings if things had been different. For instance, if a death were sudden, they may have regrets about the lack of time for preparation or goodbyes. After a prolonged death, we may lament the time that a loved one suffered. However, persistently focusing on the circums.,.nces of a death is one indication that a grieving person may benefit from professional support. One recent study involved interviews with grieving people following the death of a spouse or close relative. Researchers found that those who felt unprepared, or perceived the death as more violent than peaceful, were more likely to be diagnosed with major depression.
