near the house, but it hadn’t been kept in good order, for no reason that I know. We used some of the apples, but we often made a pilgrimage to one of the local orchards. Mom canned a lot of apples and used a lot in cooking. But, we needed some ‘keeping1 apples for the winter. These were mostly Yorks, my favorite, which seemed to keep better than most.
I remember many a night, sitting around the wood stove, doing my homework or reading or playing with the cat, and Mom would bring in a pan of apples and a paring knife. What a wonderful, simple pleasure, to eat those pieces of cold, crisp apple, sitting by the warm stove.
