rotten places, and some, when you turned them over, would have little slugs and other bugs on them. I wished we could have just bought the good apples and gone home.

Cutting creases

The other thing I remember vividly is going into the cut over Cornfields and looking for dry land cress. Of course, we didn’t call it that; they were creases or creasy greens or just cress. I don’t think they were planted by the farmers, but I could be wrong about that. It seemed that they grew wild. The farmers were pretty good about letting us cut them.

One of Dad’s favorite places to go was down on a com bottom near the Jordan River, that was owned by Mr. Charlie Bowling. Sometimes, we would go by Mr. Bowling’s house and talk to him awhile, and other times we would go in by Galley Smith’s sawmill. Either way, Mr. Bowling let us go in there and cut the cress.
